Scene and Sound
Scene and Sound are a charity based in the East Midlands that promote accessible theatre performances across the country and engage with audiences of deaf, hard of hearing, blind and partially-sighted people.
Obviously the primary focus for Scene and Sound was ensuring that the site was as accessible and usable as possible to anyone who wanted to use it, regardless of their disabilities. This included not just accounting for variable text sizes, but ensuring that every aspect of the site was designed with an infinitely fluid layout in mind and – crucially – had to work just as well on Internet Explorer 6. Never likely to back away from a challenge, we went about building the site and rigorously testing it on every browser and platform we could get our hands on. The site has since been appraised and approved by the Royal National Institute for the Blind.
The central function of the site is to provide up-to-date listings of accessible performances in their member theatres, along with performance times, performance types (Audio Described, Captioned, Sign-Interpreted, etc.), venue details, and links to purchase tickets online. The list of shows can be filtered by performance type, show date, or even your nearby theatre.
The site is built and managed in WordPress, with some custom extensions to manage the shows themselves, and add theatre administrators who can add and edit performances at their own theatres without interfering with other listings.
